Basic applications of a voltage regulator

A voltage regulator by its name is regulating the voltage. By technical definition it maintaining a steady output of voltage in a given electronic circuit. It’s voltage can be regulated depending on the components used. Typically it has its threshold and limit voltages. the following applications will show how useful voltage regulator in circuit in today’s world.

  1. Linear Regulators is used to adjust the ERS (Effective Series Resistance) of the regulator that is based on feedback Voltage. This then becomes a voltage divider circuit.
  2. Switching Regulators  is used for high efficiency output. . Applications that needs 80% and above is recommendable to use Switching regulator than linearity one.
  3. Zener Diode is the easiest to regulate a voltage.  This diode uses the fundamental of shunting all extra voltage above the break down voltage to the ground. It is easily done by putting the Zener Diode to in parallel to the load. Mostly this diode is also used in rectifiers view it from here Such example is to produce a rectified signal. 
    While we can use a complicated designs with many capacitors we can just put one Zener Diode parallel across the load and we can regulate the voltage.
    Regulators help control voltage  so it will not damage the circuit due to over voltage.  What is likely to this  is that it helps to control the field excitation of the AC generator while its Feedback circuit disallows over/under shooting of the voltage.
